Does anyone else think that everything is so over packaged these days, it occurred to me,yet again, yesterday as my husband was opening his Fathers Day gifts that there is so much waste involved in the way things a packed and presented...I have thought this for many years and have writen a number of letters to some of the larger manufacturers of various things including children toys, cosmetics, frozen and chilled food, I gave up in the end because I didn't get a single reply. Quite often the prettiest part on a product ends up in the bin and I can't help wondering how long we can continue abusing the planets resourses this way......how many trees are felled each year to make a tube of mascara look more attactive? or a tray of chilled pasta look more tasty. I feel guilty about the amount of stuff that I through out, even though I recycle as much as I can and the hotel recycles all of its empty beer and wine bottles and all of the newspapers we buy daily for the residents...still its a drop in the ocean.

You're right! But if we all do what we can, then that little drop will eventually grow into something bigger :)

Actually... I keep all of the products in the boxes (easier to keep things in order - and it spares the products)...

I have been talking about this problem for years, and it only seems to be getting worse. Yes it's true that there is a lot more recycling going on these days, but it seems to me it would be better to reduce the amount of packaging rather than trying to deal with it once it's here. If you look at an average bag of garbage from an average kitchen you'll see that about 90% of what's in there is packaging. That's terrible. And cosmetics manufacturers are some of the worst offenders. A tiny tube of skin cream, for example, comes in an overly large package, and the higher end stuff also has that clear plastic mould in it to keep the produce straight. That plastic stuff never breaks down in the landfill.

I can't help wondering how long we can continue abusing the planets resourses this way

What really scares me is that this planet of ours has been around for countless millions and millions of years (assuming you believe in evolution instead of creation) and has been lush and green and clean for most of that time. We humans come along, and in less than 200 years (the approx industrial age) we've managed to bring this lush green world of ours to the brink of destruction. We've poisoned the air, we've poisoned the water and the ground with our excesses, and considering that 200 years is also just a "drop in the ocean" compared to the age of the planet I find that extremely alarming. I could say a lot more, but....

Totally ridiculous.

Maybe its all the advertising they stuff on the packages. I hate that.

Ellen DeGeneres has a really funny bit comparing the packaging of CDs to that of light bulbs.

and also... your committment to recycling so much is something to be proud of. It does seem so small when you are doing it, I agree. But maybe it keeps the pressure on the manufacturers to at least look like they are supporting it and using recycled stuff, and seeing someone else doing it keeps the rest of us from giving up.

LA Woman rocks huh? I love Doors my sons band covered a lot of their songs....in the days when they did covers.
Recycling, yes its very important, I'm naturally opposed to waste of any kind and if we can do something, however small, then we must do it.
